Details
A vulnerability was found in SQLite up to 3.53.x and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function countOfViewOptimization of the component View Optimization. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
SQLite before 3.54.0 contains a stack exhaustion vulnerability in countOfViewOptimization() that allows attackers to crash the host process via count(*) over a large multi-row VALUES clause. Attackers supplying SQL or a database file with a crafted view can trigger deeply nested TK_PLUS expressions whose recursive freeing in sqlite3ExprDeleteNN() exhausts the C stack, causing denial of service.
The advisory is shared for download at sqlite.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-119591 since 10/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 3.54.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
