Details
A vulnerability was found in DateTime::Lite up to 0.8.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function _normalize_leap_seconds of the component Leap Second Normalization. The manipulation of the argument n with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
DateTime::Lite versions before 0.8.1 for Perl allow CPU exhaustion via a per-day loop when adding seconds. _normalize_leap_seconds crosses day boundaries one day at a time, so add(seconds => $n) on an object with a non-floating time zone takes about |$n|/86400 iterations, and nothing limits $n. The XS implementation and the pure-Perl fallback both have the loop. An attacker who controls the number of seconds added can keep the process busy for as long as they choose.
The advisory is available at metacpan.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-87768 since 09/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 0.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
