Details
A vulnerability was found in Element Labs LM Studio up to 0.4.22+0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function resolveDownloadRequest of the component Model Downloader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
LM Studio before 0.4.22+1 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the model downloader's resolveDownloadRequest that allows attackers to write files outside the models directory using backslash-separated traversal filenames. Attackers can trick users into downloading a crafted model repository that plants a plugin manifest.json, install-state.json and mcp-bridge-config.json, running an attacker-supplied Python payload on every launch.
The advisory is shared at lmstudio.ai. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-119979 since 10/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
