Details
A vulnerability was found in strukturag libheif up to 1.23.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function unc_decoder_mixed_interleave::processTile of the component HEIF Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
libheif 1.18.0 before 1.23.3 contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in unc_decoder_mixed_interleave::processTile() that allows attackers to write out of bounds by supplying chroma components with unequal bit depths. Attackers can craft a HEIF file declaring, for example, 16-bit Cb and 8-bit Cr to trigger file-controlled heap writes past the Cr plane, potentially achieving code execution in image-processing pipelines.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-120208 since 10/31/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 1.23.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-114729). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
