FFmpeg up to 9.0.2 Sun Raster Decoder sunrast_decode_frame missing initialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 9.0.2. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sunrast_decode_frame of the component Sun Raster Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing initialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-456. The product does not initialize critical variables, which causes the execution environment to use unexpected values. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

FFmpeg 0.10 through 9.0.2 contains a use of uninitialized resource vulnerability in sunrast_decode_frame() that leaks heap memory when decoding truncated 1-bit and 4-bit paletted Sun Raster images. Attackers can craft a truncated Sun Raster file so the uncleared temporary bitmap is expanded into PAL8 pixels, exposing stale heap contents such as allocator words in decoded output.

The advisory is shared for download at code.ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-120245 since 10/31/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
