Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0 trusted_keys trusted_tpm_unseal return value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function trusted_tpm_unseal of the component trusted_keys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: keys/trusted_keys: return immediately after TPM unseal failure trusted_tpm_unseal() proceeds to pcrlock() when the TPM unseal operation fails. If pcrlock() succeeds, its return value overwrites the unseal error, causing key instantiation to succeed. Return immediately when unseal fails to preserve the original error.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-99221 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/02/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.15.224, 6.1.191, 6.6.161, 6.12.115, 6.18.60, 7.2.14 or 7.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4876f09ce222e140a73aad950882b3605440c935/2d92a0f87c338a08367aff05edd1ade86da4ac8d/234d09bb3b3d84851d4b3246272addc30f3353eb/6e359d8cb8580b9874801dea930086effd4d9c62/e55d48f21f591a9fe80d26b5fbd1912ea725d9e6/63b19ec2863b2cb5279b746ecd3d6210b1a93945/ed697a5f667435bbb1cedbe5bd9f300de645047d is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
