Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13 ntfs ntfs_attr_fallocate information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13. The affected element is the function ntfs_attr_fallocate of the component ntfs. Such manipulation leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-99242. The attack must be carried out locally. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ntfs_attr_fallocate of the component ntfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntfs: fix race between fallocate and mmap reads The fallocate implementation only takes invalidate_lock for punch hole, collapse range, and insert range operations. For standard allocation modes (mode == 0, FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE), the lock is not held. During ntfs_attr_fallocate(), new clusters are mapped to the runlist via ntfs_attr_map_cluster() before being zeroed by ntfs_dio_zero_range(). This creates a window where concurrent mmap page faults can read uninitialized disk data. Since mmap uses filemap_fault() which takes invalidate_lock in shared mode, it can fault in pages during this window and expose old disk contents to userspace. This is an information leak and data integrity issue. Fix by taking invalidate_lock for all fallocate operations, not just for punch/collapse/insert modes. This prevents concurrent page faults from accessing unzeroed clusters during the allocation window.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-99242 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 7.2.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7dd1c2fec6ebdd1a88a02cb58ff515a258eeb327/67aded1da114dc44808315f249bd9e7e440f799d is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-115284). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
