Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0 Coredump coredump_finish infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as very critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0. This affects the function coredump_finish of the component Coredump. Executing a manipulation can lead to infinite loop. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-99218. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function coredump_finish of the component Coredump. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: coredump: hold RCU while releasing parked threads coredump_finish() releases the parked threads by clearing ->task in their core_thread entry and calling wake_up_process() on each of them. It does that without holding a reference on the task and without being inside rcu. But calling wake_up_process(task) without rcu here isn't safe. A parked thread doesn't need that wakeup to leave. A spurious wakeup or a preemption after the store is enough for the task to go away. So if the coredump client is preempted between the store and wake_up_process() the thread can exit and be freed in the meantime and try_to_wake_up() takes pi_lock in freed memory. Hold rcu across the loop.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-99218 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/02/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.191, 6.6.161, 6.12.115, 6.18.60, 7.2.14 or 7.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch fd0fbe84312fda2fc187428c92c50b7d03a9d24c/71146c437bae59e5280f657965dc6d006ee3989b/0fce73efee40c65ce26641c5d93942462f9e8307/16e94ed90b1b02398e044d41fd1db34828daa08e/a0f09ff4c6b93312e565cfe75d76c3a551a3ec4c/b0eca0edddf4c1dbaf6d1f6a8636b4235f5bc573 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
