Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13/7.3.0 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function syscall_copy_user_array of the component tracing. The manipulation of the argument buffer with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing/syscalls: Use copy_from_user for the faultable syscall buffer syscall_copy_user_array() copies the buffer argument of faultable syscalls (write, pwrite64, ...) with __copy_from_user(), which skips access_ok(). Use copy_from_user() instead so a non-user address is rejected and the entry is recorded as faulted. It could be a security concern for machines that trust perf a bit too much.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-99232 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/02/2026).
Upgrading to version 7.2.14 or 7.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e33e2718c62a602001ab549642a1aed0be797105/041d1a568a11a7ed7415ef1408d0c65041c1ad69 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
