Linux Kernel up to 6.18.59/7.2.13/7.3.0 tracing update_last_data_if_empty race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.59/7.2.13/7.3.0. This issue affects the function update_last_data_if_empty of the component tracing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Hold trace_types_lock when resetting last boot data from readers update_last_data_if_empty() is called from tracing_open() with O_TRUNC, tracing_read_pipe() and tracing_buffers_read() without trace_types_lock. Two readers can both pass the LAST_BOOT test and free module_delta twice, and a module notifier can update module_delta while it is being freed. Take trace_types_lock in those paths and keep the callers that already hold it on an unlocked variant.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-99237 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/02/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.60, 7.2.14 or 7.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 92b69f6db640dadc0851762ee2e12db99f083cad/d6d991afe775ab7fcf89523a2502b7ca3be56ffd/1f06cfe0b60a878619d1d8efe1cd0f515b7dc2aa is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-115279). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
