Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8 Frame privileges management ⚔ [Disputed]

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8 (Web Browser). This affects some unknown processing of the component Frame Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Cross-domain vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and 8 allows remote attackers to change the location property of a frame via the Object data type, and use a frame from a different domain to observe domain-independent events, as demonstrated by observing onkeydown events with caballero-listener. NOTE: according to Microsoft, this is a duplicate of CVE-2008-2947, possibly a different attack vector.

The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was presented 06/30/2008 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-2948. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. According to Microsoft, this is a duplicate of CVE-2008-2947, possibly a different attack vector.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1069 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5762.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43467), SecurityFocus (BID 29986†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-18780†). See VDB-42994 for similar entry. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
