Details
A vulnerability was found in Furl up to 3.15. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file lib/Furl/ZlibStream.pm of the component Decompression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Furl versions through 3.15 for Perl allow memory exhaustion via unbounded decompression of HTTP responses. Furl inflates a response body sent with a gzip, x-gzip or deflate Content-Encoding and appends the output to the response string with no size limit. It does this whether or not the request asked for compression, and no option caps the decompressed size. Responses read with write_file or write_code are streamed rather than held in memory. A malicious server, or an attacker on a plain HTTP connection, can send a small compressed response that expands to exhaust the client's memory and end the process.
The advisory is shared at metacpan.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-65059 since 07/21/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
