Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in CoreTypes in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5.4 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a (1) .xht or (2) .xhtm file, which does not trigger a "potentially unsafe" warning message in (a) the Download Validation feature in Mac OS X 10.4 or (b) the Quarantine feature in Mac OS X 10.5.
The bug was discovered 06/30/2008. The weakness was released 07/01/2008 by Andrew with University of Michigan as HT2163 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2309 since 05/18/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33281 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115848 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Security Update 2008-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-06-30)).
Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
