CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X Server up to 10.5.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Launch Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Launch Services in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5, when Open Safe Files is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a symlink attack, probably related to a race condition and automatic execution of a downloaded file.

The bug was discovered 06/30/2008. The weakness was presented 07/01/2008 by Andrew with University of Michigan as HT2163 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2311 since 05/18/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33281 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115848 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Security Update 2008-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-06-30)).

Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43495), Tenable (33281), SecurityFocus (BID 30018†), OSVDB (46666†) and Secunia (SA30802†).
