Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0 io_uring io_poll_check_events toctou

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3.0 and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function io_poll_check_events of the component io_uring. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a toctou vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-367. The product checks the state of a resource before using that resource, but the resource's state can change between the check and the use in a way that invalidates the results of the check. This can cause the product to perform invalid actions when the resource is in an unexpected state. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: io_uring/poll: avoid retry wakeup loss when dropping ownership If a wakeup sets IO_POLL_RETRY_FLAG between the owning task consuming the existing instance of IO_POLL_RETRY_FLAG and the loop check of io_poll_check_events(), then we stall on processing the request until an unrelated wakeup comes along. Using atomic_cmpxchg instead of atomic_sub_return to guarantee both the count v and poll_refs are 0 and no wake-ups are missed.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-99263 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/03/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.191, 6.6.161, 6.12.115, 6.18.60, 7.2.14 or 7.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d1f6850086ac6f8b0fa44fb19aa2a468c73ee071/41fae2e9e1fa3bee86aee0a25ba90e59ce5024bf/4ef685b8505615729d75c875f52822238bf76ca6/afa407c02f3aa0fd872f86c9bf1b34502e0fa8f0/eb2a50d8235e4580fea9aa20f3fbe1a002c38cb1/521e8a65e9b45532295ba1082ef12be6e80c173b is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
