Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13 sched_ext race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function scx_move_local_task_to_local_dsq/unlink_dsq_and_switch_rq_lock/move_task_between_dsqs of the component sched_ext. This manipulation causes race condition. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-99269. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.13. Affected by this vulnerability is the function scx_move_local_task_to_local_dsq/unlink_dsq_and_switch_rq_lock/move_task_between_dsqs of the component sched_ext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sched_ext: Wait for SCX_OPSS_DISPATCHING before moving tasks off DSQs A task can be found on a non-local DSQ while the CPU which dispatched it is still running ops.dequeue() and hasn't cleared SCX_OPSS_DISPATCHING. The DSQ consume and move paths don't wait for the dispatch to finish and can operate on the task concurrently with the dispatcher. Call scx_wait_dispatching() in scx_move_local_task_to_local_dsq(), unlink_dsq_and_switch_rq_lock() and move_task_between_dsqs() before they operate on the task. In scx_move_local_task_to_local_dsq(), wait before scx_resolve_local_dsq() as it may update p->scx.flags.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-99269 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/03/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.2.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cc2839946328c1618b3870d521b32bb9483d49d0/2935062be77113c1c4565ca9d0c72180449aafee is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
