MongoDB Database Tools up to 100.20.0 mongorestore improper authorization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MongoDB Database Tools up to 100.20.0. It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component mongorestore. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authorization vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-285. The product does not perform or incorrectly performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

MongoDB Database Tools mongorestore incorrectly URL-decodes an original collection name read from metadata when the corresponding dump filename has been truncated. A database user who can create and populate a suitably encoded collection can cause a later authorized directory restore to write those documents into a different collection that the user cannot modify directly. When both collection names resolve to the same destination, backed-up documents may be omitted; use of --drop can also replace the unintended destination collection. Exploitation requires an operator to restore the affected collection from a directory dump with write access to the destination. This issue affects MongoDB Database Tools versions 100.0.2 through versions before 100.20.1.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-119674 since 10/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1548.002 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 100.20.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
