MongoDB Database Tools up to 100.20.0 mongofiles symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MongoDB Database Tools up to 100.20.0. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component mongofiles. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

MongoDB Database Tools mongofiles does not resolve existing parent-directory symlinks when validating output paths for get_regex. An unauthorized user who can both upload a GridFS file and place a symlink in the operator's download working directory can cause a later retrieval to create a file containing unauthorized user-controlled data outside that directory, using the operator process's filesystem permissions. The issue can occur with default traversal and overwrite settings. Exploitation requires an operator to retrieve matching files from the affected working directory; the demonstrated default behavior creates a new file rather than overwriting an existing file. This issue affects MongoDB Database Tools versions 100.2.0 through versions before 100.20.1.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-119673 since 10/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 100.20.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
