MongoDB C Driver up to 2.5.7 BSON Vector integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in MongoDB C Driver up to 2.5.7. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component BSON Vector Handler. This manipulation causes integer overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2026-120954. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in MongoDB C Driver up to 2.5.7. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component BSON Vector Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

A weakness in the BSON library's handling of a specialized binary vector data type allows an arithmetic wraparound when computing the number of elements described by an oversized attacker-supplied value. On builds where the platform word size is 32 bits, an application that parses untrusted BSON data can be made to process only a small fraction of the supplied elements while the operation reports success, producing results that disagree with byte-oriented accessors and with 64-bit builds of the same library. No authentication or user interaction is required beyond getting the application to parse the data. The impact is limited to data integrity; memory safety is not affected and no information is disclosed.

The advisory is shared at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-120954 since 11/03/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/03/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
