GNU C Library 2.x fnmatch resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) before 2.12.2 and Embedded GLIBC (EGLIBC) allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a long UTF8 string that is used in an fnmatch call, aka a "stack extension attack," a related issue to CVE-2010-2898, CVE-2010-1917, and CVE-2007-4782, as originally reported for use of this library by Google Chrome.

The weakness was presented 02/25/2011 by Simon Berry-Byrne as Bug 11883 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-1071 since 02/24/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53430 (CentOS 5 : glibc (CESA-2011:0412)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216011 (VMWare ESXi 4.0.0 Patch Release ESXi400-201110001 Missing (KB1036397)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65671), Exploit-DB (17120), Tenable (53430), SecurityFocus (BID 46563†) and Secunia (SA43492†). See VDB-51484, VDB-53417, VDB-57049 and VDB-57029 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
