Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 7, JDK and JRE 5.0 before Update 16, SDK and JRE 1.4.x before 1.4.2_18, and SDK and JRE 1.3.x before 1.3.1_23 allow remote attackers to violate the security model for an applet s outbound connections by connecting to localhost services running on the machine that loaded the applet.
The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2008 by Gregory Fleischer (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3104 since 07/09/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34072 (SuSE 10 Security Update : IBM Java 1.5.0 (ZYPP Patch Number 5557)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165697 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Sun Java (SUSE-SA:2008:042)).
Upgrading to version 1.3.1 01 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
