Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Document LibreOffice up to 26.2.5/26.8.0. This affects some unknown processing of the component dBASE database driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. The product writes past the end of a buffer that was allocated on the heap. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
LibreOffice includes a dBASE database driver, which reads dBASE tables and their .ndx index files when a folder of dBASE files is used as a data source. A heap buffer overflow existed when an index page was read. The number of entries recorded in a page was not checked against the number of entries the page could hold, which comes from a different field of the index header. A crafted index could also make a page refer back to itself, so that reading it recursed without end. In fixed versions the index header and the entry count of each page are limited to what an index page can hold, and a page that refers back to one of its parent pages is not followed.
The advisory is shared at libreoffice.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-76181 since 08/19/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
