Details
A vulnerability was found in Posit Software Posit Workbench and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function get_last_seen of the component Session State RPC. The manipulation of the argument sessionIds with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQL injection vulnerability in the get_last_seen code-server session-state RPC in Posit Software, PBC Posit Workbench before 2026.08.0 allows authenticated users to read arbitrary data from the Workbench database via the sessionIds parameter. NOTE: exploitation requires a valid authenticated session; no administrative privileges are needed. The vulnerability is limited to disclosure of database contents.
The advisory is available at docs.posit.co. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-121881 since 11/04/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
