Details
A vulnerability was found in GradleUp Shadow up to 9.5.x and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Archive Processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The Gradle Shadow plugin creates fat or uber JARs and supports file transformation and package relocation. Prior to version 9.6.0, Shadow does not independently validate ZIP entry names before writing them to its output archive. A malicious dependency can cause traversal entry names to be preserved when the applicable archive-processing path does not reject them. Some affected Shadow implementations process dependency archives directly, so upgrading Gradle alone does not universally prevent this behavior. If the resulting archive is extracted without path traversal protection, attacker-controlled files can be written outside the intended destination. This issue is fixed in version 9.6.0.
It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-75598 since 08/18/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
