RRD::CGI::Image up to 0.01 normalize_params tz locking

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in RRD::CGI::Image up to 0.01. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function normalize_params. The manipulation of the argument tz with an unknown input leads to a locking vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-667. The product does not properly acquire or release a lock on a resource, leading to unexpected resource state changes and behaviors. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

RRD::CGI::Image versions through 0.01 for Perl pass CGI query parameters containting "tz" to tzset(), , so a FIFO or device path blocks the CGI process. The normalize_params method sends any query key matching /tz/i to tz(), which sets $ENV{TZ} to that value, with no validation. It then calls tzset(). glibc treats a TZ value starting with / or : as a file path and opens it, so a value naming a FIFO or a blocking device stalls the process inside tzset().

It is possible to read the advisory at rt.cpan.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-123776 since 11/06/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
