Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Fraunhofer HHI vvdec up to 3.2.0. Affected by this issue is the function CABACReader::readAlf/AdaptiveLoopFilter::reconstructCoeff of the component ALF Decoding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC before 3.2.1 contains a heap use-after-free vulnerability that allows attackers to corrupt memory by redefining an ALF adaptation parameter set id still referenced by slices. Attackers can supply a crafted VVC bitstream that, with multithreaded decoding, makes worker threads dereference freed APS objects in CABACReader::readAlf() and AdaptiveLoopFilter::reconstructCoeff(), causing crashes or heap corruption.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-124307 since 11/07/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 3.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
