Details
A vulnerability was found in Fraunhofer HHI vvdec up to 3.2.0. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DecLibRecon::createSubPicRefBufs of the component DecLibRecon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC before 3.2.1 contains a heap use-after-free vulnerability in DecLibRecon::createSubPicRefBufs because decompressPicture clears m_subPicExtTasks without waiting for pending tasks. Attackers can supply a crafted multi-subpicture VVC bitstream to decoders using two or more threads, causing heap memory corruption or a decoder crash.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-124308 since 11/07/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack.
