Details
A vulnerability was found in Hickory DNS up to 0.25.2. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Recursive Resolver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Hickory DNS 0.25.0-alpha.3 through 0.25.2 contains a query amplification vulnerability in its recursive resolver, which mishandles cyclic sibling name server referrals that lack glue records. Attackers controlling two zones whose name servers reference each other without glue records can make the recursor loop, sending many upstream queries, amplified further by zero-TTL NS records.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-123586 since 11/06/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely.
