Details
A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer 10.0/10.1/10.5 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Shockwave Flash (SWF) frame handling in RealNetworks RealPlayer 10.5 Build 6.0.12.1483 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SWF file.
The bug was discovered 07/25/2008. The weakness was shared 07/28/2008 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5400 since 10/12/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 06/02/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71486 (GLSA-201312-11 : Win32 Codecs: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115866 (RealNetworks RealPlayer SWF Frame Handling Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9195.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43996), Tenable (71486), SecurityFocus (BID 30370†), OSVDB (47138†) and Secunia (SA27620†). The entries VDB-41480, VDB-43407 and VDB-43406 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
