Details
A vulnerability has been found in Python (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in Python 2.5.2 and earlier allow context-dependent attackers to have an unknown impact via vectors related to the (1) stringobject, (2) unicodeobject, (3) bufferobject, (4) longobject, (5) tupleobject, (6) stropmodule, (7) gcmodule, and (8) mmapmodule modules. NOTE: The expandtabs integer overflows in stringobject and unicodeobject in 2.5.2 are covered by CVE-2008-5031.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/01/2008 by David Remahl with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2315 since 05/18/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34164 (FreeBSD : python -- multiple vulnerabilities (0dccaa28-7f3c-11dd-8de5-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155849 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Python (ELSA-2009-1178)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44173), Tenable (34164), SecurityFocus (BID 30491†), OSVDB (47478†) and Secunia (SA31305†). The entries VDB-43497, VDB-43496, VDB-43495 and VDB-43493 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
