Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in WinZip 7.0/8.0/8.1/9.0/10.0 (File Compression Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component DNS Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
WinZip before 11.0 does not properly verify the authenticity of updates, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Trojan horse update, as demonstrated by evilgrade and DNS cache poisoning.
The weakness was presented 08/01/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at infobyte.com.ar. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3442 since 08/01/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
