A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.11 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component File Management. Stack-based buffer overflow in CarbonCore in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.4, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, and iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a long filename to the file management API.
The bug was discovered 08/01/2008. The weakness was published 08/03/2008 by Shadow (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2320 since 05/18/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
