A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.1.8 (Web Server) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file proxy_ftp.c of the component mod_proxy_ftp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in proxy_ftp.c in the mod_proxy_ftp module in Apache 2.0.63 and earlier, and mod_proxy_ftp.c in the mod_proxy_ftp module in Apache 2.2.9 and earlier 2.2 versions, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a wildcard in the last directory component in the pathname in an FTP URI.

The bug was discovered 08/05/2008. The weakness was released 08/06/2008 by Marc Bevand (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2939 since 06/30/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34433 (Apache mod_proxy_ftp Directory Component Wildcard Character Globbing XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86818 (Apache HTTP Server mod_proxy_ftp Wildcard Characters Cross-Site Scripting).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11172.
