Multiple format string vulnerabilities in snoop on Sun Solaris 8 through 10 and OpenSolaris before snv_96, when the -o option is omitted, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in an SMB packet.
The bug was discovered 08/05/2008. The weakness was presented 08/08/2008 by Gael Delalleau (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0965 since 02/25/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33911 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 138083-01), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115880 (Sun Solaris Security Issue in Solaris snoop(1M) when Displaying SMB Traffic (1019497.1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
