PowerDNS Authoritative Server before 2.9.21.1 drops malformed queries, which might make it easier for remote attackers to poison DNS caches of other products running on other servers, a different issue than CVE-2008-1447 and CVE-2008-3217.
The bug was discovered 08/06/2008. The weakness was presented 08/08/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mailman.powerdns.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3337 since 07/27/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33887 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : pdns (pdns-5510)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115918 (PowerDNS Malformed Query Handling Weakness).
Upgrading to version 2.9.21 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
