Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 0.3.2 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory leak in racoon/proposal.c in the racoon daemon in ipsec-tools before 0.7.1 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via invalid proposals.
The bug was discovered 07/24/2008. The weakness was presented 08/12/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3651 since 08/12/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67741 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : ipsec-tools (ELSA-2008-0849)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117251 (CentOS Security Update for ipsec (CESA-2008:0849)).
Upgrading to version 0.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44395), Tenable (67741), SecurityFocus (BID 30657†), OSVDB (47374†) and Secunia (SA35074†). See VDB-3978, VDB-23858, VDB-30376 and VDB-40710 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
