A vulnerability has been found in Ruby up to 1.9.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation of the argument PROGRAM_NAME with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. Ruby 1.8.5 and earlier, 1.8.6 through 1.8.6-p286, 1.8.7 through 1.8.7-p71, and 1.9 through r18423 does not properly restrict access to critical variables and methods at various safe levels, which allows context-dependent attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via (1) untrace_var, (2) $PROGRAM_NAME, and (3) syslog at safe level 4, and (4) insecure methods at safe levels 1 through 3.
The bug was discovered 08/08/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3655 since 08/12/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34387 (Debian DSA-1651-1 : ruby1.8 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165649 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update dhcp-client (SUSE-SA:2009:037)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
