A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Openwsman 1.2.0/2.0.0. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Authorization. Multiple buffer overflows in Openwsman 1.2.0 and 2.0.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted "Authorization: Basic" HTTP header.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2008. The weakness was published 08/18/2008 by Security Team with SuSE Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2234 since 05/16/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52010 (VMSA-2008-0015 : Updated ESXi and ESX 3.5 packages address critical security issue in openwsman), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115890 (SUSE Security Announcement: openwsman (SUSE-SA:2008:041)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3691.
