Details
A vulnerability was found in Postfix. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Postfix before 2.3.15, 2.4 before 2.4.8, 2.5 before 2.5.4, and 2.6 before 2.6-20080814, when the operating system supports hard links to symlinks, allows local users to append e-mail messages to a file to which a root-owned symlink points, by creating a hard link to this symlink and then sending a message. NOTE: this can be leveraged to gain privileges if there is a symlink to an init script.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2008. The weakness was released 08/18/2008 by Sebastian Krahmer as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2936 since 06/30/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by RoMaNSoFt in Shell File and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67738 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : postfix (ELSA-2008-0839)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165696 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Postfix (SUSE-SA:2008:040)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44460), Exploit-DB (6337), Tenable (67738), SecurityFocus (BID 30691†) and OSVDB (47658†).
