Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun OpenSolaris (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Remote Procedure Call. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in the NFS Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) zones implementation in Sun Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris before snv_88 allows local administrators of non-global zones to read and modify NFS traffic for arbitrary non-global zones, possibly leading to file modifications or a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 08/25/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3838 since 08/27/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34067 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 138071-03), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115923 (Solaris 10 NFS Remote Procedure Calls Denial of Service Vulnerability (1019543.1)).
Upgrading to version Snv 85 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44696), Tenable (34067), SecurityFocus (BID 30853†), OSVDB (47826†) and Secunia (SA31622†). The entry VDB-43818 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
