This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3911. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.26.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function proc_do_xprt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The proc_do_xprt function in net/sunrpc/sysctl.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.26.3 does not check the length of a certain buffer obtained from userspace, which allows local users to overflow a stack-based buffer and have unspecified other impact via a crafted read system call for the /proc/sys/sunrpc/transports file.

The bug was discovered 08/30/2008. The weakness was presented 09/04/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3911 since 09/04/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 53 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40010 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (kernel-270)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116022 (SUSE Security Announcement: Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2008:053)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45136), Tenable (40010), SecurityFocus (BID 31937†), OSVDB (48471†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-19953†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
