A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version). Affected by this issue is the function Domain Lookup of the component DNS Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The DNS server in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1 does not properly initialize memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (service outage) via a query for a nonexistent domain, aka "DNS Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 08/09/2011 with Microsoft as MS11-058 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1970 since 05/09/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
