A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007/Xp (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component URI Handler. Argument injection vulnerability in a URI handler in Microsoft Office XP SP3, 2003 SP2 and SP3, 2007 Office System Gold and SP1, and Office OneNote 2007 Gold and SP1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted onenote:// URL, aka "Uniform Resource Locator Validation Error Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 09/09/2008. The weakness was disclosed 09/10/2008 by Brett Moore with Insomnia Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3007 since 07/07/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34123 (MS08-055: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (955047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110086 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-055)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6324.
