Apple QuickTime up to 7.5 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.5.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) movie file with crafted (1) maxTilt, (2) minFieldOfView, and (3) maxFieldOfView elements in panorama track PDAT atoms.

The bug was discovered 09/09/2008. The weakness was disclosed 09/10/2008 by Roee Hay (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3625 since 08/12/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34118 (QuickTime < 7.5.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115937 (Apple QuickTime 7.5.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 7.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6169.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44999), Tenable (34118), SecurityFocus (BID 31086†), OSVDB (48030†) and Secunia (SA31821†). The entries VDB-3829, VDB-3830, VDB-3832 and VDB-3827 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
