Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iTunes (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the IopfCompleteRequest API in the kernel in Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, and Vista allows context-dependent attackers to gain privileges. NOTE: this issue was originally reported for GEARAspiWDM.sys 2.0.7.5 in Gear Software CD DVD Filter driver before 4.001.7, as used in other products including Apple iTunes and multiple Symantec and Norton products, which allows local users to gain privileges via repeated IoAttachDevice IOCTL calls to \\.\GEARAspiWDMDevice in this GEARAspiWDM.sys. However, the root cause is the integer overflow in the API call itself.
The bug was discovered 09/09/2008. The weakness was released 09/10/2008 by Ruben Santamarta with Wintercore as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3636 since 08/12/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34158 (Apple iTunes < 8.0 Integer Buffer Overflow (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115973 (Apple iTunes Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (APPLE-SA-2009-09-09)).
Upgrading to version 4.7.1.30 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45012), Tenable (34158), SecurityFocus (BID 31089†), OSVDB (48009†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1020839†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
