A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function mkfifo of the component Directory Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. slapconfig in Directory Services in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.5.4 allows local users to select a readable output file into which the server password will be written by an OpenLDAP system administrator, related to the mkfifo function, aka an "insecure file operation issue."
The bug was discovered 09/15/2008. The weakness was released 09/16/2008 by Robert Swiecki with Google Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2330 since 05/18/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34211 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115955 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.5 and Security Update 2008-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-09-15)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
