Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Login Window in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 does not clear the current password when a user makes a password-change attempt that is denied by policy, which allows opportunistic, physically proximate attackers to bypass authentication and change this user s password by later entering an acceptable new password on the same login screen.

The bug was discovered 09/15/2008. The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2008 by Robert Swiecki with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3611 since 08/12/2008. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34211 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115955 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.5 and Security Update 2008-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-09-15)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45171), Tenable (34211), SecurityFocus (BID 31189†), OSVDB (48191†) and Secunia (SA31882†). The entries VDB-42790, VDB-42001, VDB-42000 and VDB-41999 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
