SuSE Linux 22.1 Python code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in SuSE Linux 22.1 and classified as problematic. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Python. The manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3949. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SuSE Linux 22.1 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

emacs/lisp/progmodes/python.el in Emacs 22.1 and 22.2 imports Python script from the current working directory during editing of a Python file, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a Trojan horse Python file.

The weakness was disclosed 09/22/2008 as Bug 424340 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.novell.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3949. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34213 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : emacs (emacs-5597)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (34213), SecurityFocus (BID 31052†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-19507†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
