A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Opera Web Browser up to 7.22 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component File Download Handler. The manipulation with the input value %5C leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 10/09/2003. The weakness was presented 12/12/2003 by imagine and nesumin with Operash (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at opera.rainyblue.org. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at opera.rainyblue.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 64 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 7.23 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at opera.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
