Details
A vulnerability was found in Jasper 1.900.1 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function jas_stream_tmpfile. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the jas_stream_tmpfile function in libjasper/base/jas_stream.c in JasPer 1.900.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (program exit) by creating the appropriate tmp.XXXXXXXXXX temporary file, which causes Jasper to exit. NOTE: this was originally reported as a symlink issue, but this was incorrect. NOTE: some vendors dispute the severity of this issue, but it satisfies CVE s requirements for inclusion.
The bug was discovered 09/29/2008. The weakness was presented 10/02/2008 as Bug CVE-200 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3521 since 08/07/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement.
